Golbari - The famous Kosha Mangsho

golbari, originally uploaded by aloke majumder.

The news first I noticed on Anandabazar Patrika, that the famous Golbari is open again . And woow, that reminds me the time when we were in university . So a couple of days later, Aushtomi afternoon, with my friend and foodie partner Krishnendu, I landed up at New Punjabi Hotel, at the Shyambazar five-point crossing, popularly known as Golbari, because it is housed in semicircular a building.

Once we were there, we noticed the a long queue of people wating for their turn to get inside . We waited for few minutes and then decoded to have parcels instead of having it there . Golbari belongs to a specific category of old Calcutta eateries, famous for special Kosha mangsho with a distinctive taste with a blackish appearance and soft, pliable, thin chapatis, slightly ghee-smeared, the like of which you will get nowhere else.

The food was still hot when I got back and I dug in hungrily, the good old Golbari kosha mangsho at its prime-rich, a bit hot on the palate, and delicious, with a hint of caramelised sugar. The chapatis suffer a little if not eaten immediately, but there was no choice. Remember we drive and back to shyambazar from Howrah, dodging the crowd of Aushtomi .

Its a must try for all you foodies .

after tasting that mutton, I was feeling like “I am in heaven”. Yea, too much spicy for sure - but you can name it as Passion for Suicide !!!

For info, a NRI chain “Koshe Kosha” copied that food recipe and made lesser spicy version, which don’t have ethnicity, but good for health conscious.
